Standardization vs. Subjective Perception
The Challenge
A client switching from a low-cost “generic” ink set to our premium solution claimed they saw a difference in “white purity.” However, their comparison was non-scientific, using different graphics and non-standardized backgrounds, which skewed their visual perception.
Our Solution
We conducted a technical audit to standardize the testing process. We used the Checker Shadow Illusion* to demonstrate how the human eye is easily tricked by surrounding context and shadows. We then implemented:
- Standardized Comparative Tests: Printing the same target file on identical substrates using the same color profiles.
- Spectrophotometric Analysis: Using precision instruments to provide objective data (Delta E) rather than subjective visual opinions.
The Result
We scientifically proved that our ink provided superior color consistency. The client moved from “guesswork” to a data-driven Quality Control protocol, solidifying a partnership built on trust and technical expertise.
*The checker shadow illusion is an optical illusion published by Edward H. Adelson, professor of vision science at MIT, in 1995.[1] It demonstrates the context-dependent nature of human color perception.
The squares A and B have the same background color, but the difference of the background (one is under the light the other one is in the shadow) generates this psychological false impression that the two are different, I have added on the same image (look at the second image) a coloured rectangle with a uniform grey shade matching the background of A, which connects to A and B.
